Swedish conductor Johan Arnell was born in Kalmar and studied at the Vienna Musikhochschule with Hans Swarowsky (conducting) and Alfred Uhl (composition). After that he became an assistant of Herbert von Karajan for several years. In 1975 he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, which marked the beginning of a long artistic partnership. Further centres of activities were the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Hamburg State Opera. Between 1993 bis 1996 he was Principal Conductor of the Halle Opera. As an internationally requested conductor for operatic and symphonic repertoire Johan Arnell has appeared in London, Tokyo, Barcelona, Athens, Budapest, Sofia, Belgrad, Kopenhagen, Oslo and Marseille. With various orchestras such as the Stockholm Philharmonic, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra or the Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra he made a vast number of CD recordings.
