Bulgarian conductor Vladimir Ghiaurov was born in Sofia, as the son of the famous bass Nicolai Ghiaurov. He began his musical training by studying for a diploma in piano at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. He then transferred to the Vienna Musik-Akademie, where he studied conducting and composition with Karl Osterreicher. Following further studies with Franco Ferrara, he made his conducting debut in Italy in 1980. Shortly thereafter he began to receive invitations to opera houses and orchestras in many European countries such as France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Spain, Norway and Switzerland, as well as from Japan and Taiwan. The international press hailed Ghiaurov as "one of the most promising conductors of the young generation." Over the past years, Ghiaurov has built up an outstanding reputation, especially for the temperament and personality he brings to his interpretations of Italian operas. However, his repertoire also comprises a great number of operas and symphonic works of all eras. He was the principal conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Plovdiv from 1987 to 1996, and made widely noted guest appearances with the Vienna State Opera, Moscow's Bolshoi Theater, Berlin's Konzerthaus and in Tokyo, where he has conducted several times, and also Verdi's Don Carlo in December 2002. In 2003 and 2004 he opened the season of the Sofia National Opera and guested for the first time at the Opera Ireland in Dublin with "Rigoletto" at the end of 2004. Many more concert and opera appearances are on his agenda for the near future. Vladimir Ghiaurov has also taken part in a number of CD and radio recordings.
