At the age of 24 Alexander Joel made his debut at the opera house in Nürnberg. He studied piano and composition in Vienna and finished his degree as conductor at the Vienna Conservatory of Music with honours. He won a prize at the European Conductors Competition in Spoleto and took master-classes in Tanglewood.
As Music Director of the Staatstheater Braunschweig, Alexander Joel conducts a vast variety of the concert and opera reperoire. Guest conductings have taken him to the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Tosca), Staatsoper Hamburg (Nozze di Figaro and Madama Butterfly), the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden (Faust and Fledermaus) and to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf (Tosca). He has also been conducting two highly successful new productions of Richard Strauss' Frau ohne Schatten and Don Carlo at the De Vlaamse Opera Antwerp. Further engagements have taken him to the Bayerische Staatsoper München (Entführung aus dem Serail and Die Fledermaus), the New National Theatre Tokyo, the Teatro Municipal Santiago de Chile (new production of Don Carlo) and he was also a guest conductor at the Finnish National Opera Helsinki, the Komische Oper Berlin and the Teatro Regio di Parma.
Alexander Joel has conducted various renowned orchestras, such as the Gürzenich Orchester Köln, the MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, the RSO Wien, the Bruckner Orchester Linz and the Orchestre de Nancy. He has worked with prominent soloists such as Yuri Bashmet, Julian Rachlin, Mischa Maisky, Sabine Meyer, Juan Diego Florez, Sir Thomas Allen and Catherine Malfitano.
