Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle was born in Munich and studied there at the Richard-Strauss-Conservatory composition and conducting, later he continued his studies with Otmar Suitner in Weimar and Herbert von Karajan in Berlin and Salzburg. He appeared at the opera houses of Kassel, Innsbruck, Marseille, Nizza, Zurich, Kosice, Bratislava, Dushanbe, Tashkent, Bishkek, Baku, Ljubljana, Timisoara, Lvov (Lemberg), Odessa and at the Deutschen Oper am Rhein. He conducted the Radio Orchestras in Baden-Baden, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Bukarest and Luxembourg, the Symphony Orchestras of Essen, Wuppertal, Berlin, Sao Paulo, Vladivostok, Genua and Valencia, the Philharmonia Hungarica, George-Enescu-Philharmonic in Bucharest, the State Orchestras of Armenia, Aserbaidjan, Georgia, Kasachstan, Greece, Slowenia, Moldawia, Latvia, Slovakia and the Ukraine as well as the Philharmonic Orchestras in Zagreb, Ostrava, Brno, Strasbourg, Monte-Carlo, Dresden, Munich, Basel, St.Gallen, Ufa, Rostov-upon-Don, Kazan, Volgograd, Voronej, Nijni-Novgorod, Krasnojarsk, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, St.Petersburg and many others. Between 1992 and 1996 he worked with the State Orchestra of Belarus, initially as principal guest conductor, later as music director. This successful collaboration was documented in a number of CD recordings and TV appearances. As composer he wrote the music to a series of seven documentaries "Italy - country of promise" produced by Bavarian television. His chamber music recently was performed at the international festivals for contemporary music in Odessa and Rostov.
