Nicholas Spanos, born in Serres, Greece, is one of the most highly profiled countertenors of the young generation. He studied at the Conservatory in Thessaloniki and at the University of Maryland (USA). Among his teachers was the famous Greek countertenor Aris Christofellis. Spanos obtained a number of advancement awards and took part in master classes with Anna Tomowa-Sintow and other great artists. In 2002 Spanos was awarded the "Young Artist of the Year" prize by the Union of Greek Music and Theatre Critics. Since his solo debut in Kamatotos' ballet-opera "Proserpina" at the Athens Megaron in 2000, he has mastered a number of major roles suited to his unique voice, including Arsamene in Händel's Serse, Nerone in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, Ruggiero in Vivaldi's Orlando Furioso, Prinz Go-Go in Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre, as well as the Orpheus settings by Gluck, Monteverdi and Peri. He also commands an extensive concert repertoire. The young singer works with nearly all prominent orchestras and ensembles in Greece. Most recently, he could be seen as Orlovsky in "Die Fledermaus" at the Athens National Opera and in Debussy's "Le martyre de Saint-Sébastien" at the Megaron.
